How this server handles personal data
Ossintheus is a tool for looking people and places up in public sources. That means it handles two kinds of personal data: about you, if you have an account, and about the people searched for. This page says what is kept, why, for how long, who else receives it, and how to use your rights.

See or delete your data- Searches outside a case are kept 30 days.
- Cases are kept until you delete them.
- To delete your data yourself, open Your data.
Who is responsible
Ossintheus is software. Each server is run by its own operator, who decides what it is used for and is responsible for the personal data on it (the "controller" in data protection law, meaning the one who answers for it).
- Responsible for this server
- Ossintheus, run by a private individual in Hungary while its company (Kft.) is being registered. Write to the contact below for anything about your data.

What is kept about account holders
Only what is needed to sign you in, keep the account safe and give you your own work back: your sign-in, your session, your devices, your searches and cases, and a log of what was done.
All 9 things kept about your account, and why
- Your sign-in. A separate sign-in service holds your username, email address and password. This server never sees your password. When you sign in it receives your account id, username, access level and plan. Why: to know it is you and what you may use.
- Your session. One cookie and a matching record on the server, for at most 8 hours. Why: to keep you signed in between pages.
- Your devices. For each signed-in browser: a short label such as "Firefox on Linux", its network address, and when it signed in and was last seen. Why: so you can see your devices, sign one out, and be warned about a sign-in you did not make. Administrators see a list of recent sign-ins with the same details.
- Your searches and cases. What you looked up and what was found, stored under your account and shown only to you in the app. Each case's board is stored there too: its name, what you put on it, where you placed things, your notes and stars. So it is the same after a reload, in another browser and on another device, and it is deleted with the case. Why: it is the work you asked the tool to do.
- The activity log. One line per action: when, which kind of action, your account id and access level, the page address without what was typed into it, the result, and a scrambled form of your network address. It does not record what you searched for. Why: security, and to show who did what if something goes wrong.
- Daily limits. A count of how much of today's allowance you used. Why: fair use of shared resources.
- Access keys you create for other programs. Their name, dates and a scrambled form of the secret; the secret itself is never stored. Why: to check the key when it is used.
- Notices you dismissed. Which "What's new" notices you closed, filed under a scrambled form of your account id. Why: so they stay closed.
- Payments, if this server charges for plans. You pay on the payment provider's own page; card details never reach this server. It keeps the provider's customer reference and your plan's status. Why: to give you the plan you paid for.
There is no advertising, no tracking script, no product analytics and nothing loaded from another website.
What is kept about people searched for
When an account holder looks somebody up, the tool asks public sources about the name, username, email address, phone number or other detail they typed. It keeps what was found (in a case until the case is deleted, outside one for 30 days) and a log line that does not show who was searched for.
All 5 things kept about a person searched for
- The results: accounts found on other sites, what those profiles show publicly, profile pictures, and records from public breach and leak lists, each with the date it was true.
- Inside a case, those results stay until the account holder deletes the case. Outside a case, they are deleted automatically (see How long).
- Scheduled re-checks an account holder sets up keep the detail they watch until they are removed.
- A line in the activity log for each search: who ran it, what kind of search, the ground they gave for it, and a scrambled form of the searched detail. Someone reading the log cannot see who was searched for; an administrator who already knows a detail can check whether it was searched.
- A photo uploaded to find where it was taken is not stored. It is used for that run and then dropped.
Why: the investigation the account holder is carrying out. Each search can carry the ground it is run on, chosen from a list, and the operator can make choosing one required.
The 9 grounds a search can be run on
- ConsentThe person the search is about agreed to it (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)).
- ContractNeeded to perform or prepare a contract with that person (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Legal obligationA law requires the controller to do this (Art. 6(1)(c)).
- Vital interestsNeeded to protect somebody's life (Art. 6(1)(d)).
- Public taskA task in the public interest or official authority (Art. 6(1)(e)).
- Legitimate interestsA legitimate interest that the person's own rights do not override (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Journalism or researchJournalistic, academic or archival work under the national Art. 85/89 exemption.
- Law-enforcement authorityA competent authority acting under its own statute (Directive 2016/680).
- Own data or testingThe analyst's own identifiers, or test data with nobody behind it.
The tool records the ground the account holder gave. It does not decide whether that ground really applies: that is the account holder's and the operator's responsibility.
How long each kind is kept
- Searches outside a case: 30 days
- Cases: until you delete them
- Activity log: 365 days
On this server automatic removal has not run yet. Until the operator switches it on, nothing has been removed, so data older than these limits may still be here. You do not have to wait: open Your data to delete your own cases and searches now, and to see when removal last ran.
All 17 kinds of data, and how long each is kept
| What | Kept for |
|---|---|
| A case and everything in it | Until you delete the case. Deleting is immediate; there is no bin. |
| Searches run outside a case | 30 days from when they were run |
| Profile pictures fetched for results | 30 days from when they were fetched, or until the case that showed them is deleted |
| Picture fingerprints used to spot default pictures | 30 days |
| Camera preview frames | 6 hours |
| Street-level photos you opened | 30 days (map tiles 12 hours) |
| A photo uploaded to find where it was taken | Not stored |
| Scheduled re-checks | Until removed, or until their case is deleted |
| The activity log | 365 days. Lines are never edited; the oldest are dropped. |
| Your session, and the device and network address it signed in from | 8 hours at most |
| Devices seen before, to spot a new one | 90 days from your last sign-in, as scrambled values |
| Sign-in alerts | 7 days; the administrators' list of sign-ins 90 days |
| Daily limit counters | Today only |
| Dismissed notices | 400 days |
| Access keys for other programs | Until revoked or expired (30 days unless set shorter or longer, 90 at most) |
| Your sign-in account | Until the operator removes it from the sign-in service |
| Payment records, if any | Not removed automatically; ask the operator |
The time limits are enforced by a clean-up that runs every hour once the operator has switched it on. Your data (in Account) shows when it last ran. Deleted files are removed from the disk, not overwritten, and any backup the operator keeps of the whole server follows the operator's own schedule.
Cookies and browser storage
This server sets one cookie, __Host-ossintheus, and only once you start a session. It keeps you signed in for 8 hours at most and is never sent to other websites.
It is needed for the app to work, so there is nothing to agree to.
The cookie in full, what your browser keeps, and how to clear it
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
__Host-ossintheus | Keeps you signed in and protects forms against forged requests. It cannot be read by scripts on the page and is not sent to other websites. | 8 hours at most |
The sign-in service sets its own cookies on its own pages. The app also remembers a few things in your browser only, never on the server: your colour theme, panel layout and recent searches. Account, then Clear recent searches, forgets the searches; clearing your browser's site data forgets the rest. Your cases are kept on the server under your account (see What is kept about account holders); the browser holds a copy of them only to open quickly, and that copy and your recent searches are wiped when you sign out or your session ends.
How it is protected
Passwords stay with the sign-in service, each account's cases are kept apart from every other's, and the pages load nothing from other websites.
All 8 safeguards
- Passwords stay with the sign-in service. Administrator actions need a recent sign-in.
- On a server open to the internet, the session cookie is only sent over an encrypted connection.
- Each account's searches and cases are kept apart; one account cannot count, copy or delete another's.
- The activity log is chained, so a changed or removed line shows.
- The main searches send what you look for inside the request, not in the page address, and the server's access logs leave out the part of an address that can hold a search.
- Access keys are stored only in scrambled form, and secrets the operator enters are kept in files only the server can read.
- You can see every signed-in device, sign others out, and get an alert for a new one.
- The pages load nothing from other websites.
Your rights and how to use them
Under the GDPR (the European Union's data protection law) you have these rights. Where the app lets you act yourself, the link takes you there.
- See what is held
- Open Your data (Account, then Your data): what is stored for your account, how much, and the dates.
- Get a copy to take elsewhere
- Open Your data, then Download a copy: a zip of every file stored for your account, as it is stored (mostly plain text files a computer can read).
- Have it corrected
- Your username and email address: Account, then Password and sign-in, or ask the operator. A wrong result in a case: delete that result.
- Have it deleted
- One case: delete the case. Searches made outside a case: open Your data and press Delete these searches… in the Unsorted finds row. Everything: open Delete my data, which opens Your data at the Delete my data… button, and type the phrase it asks for. That removes every case, every saved search, every scheduled re-check and the assistant's notes for your account, at once. Some things stay for the times in How long: activity log lines, scrambled device records, dismissed notices and your sign-in account. To have those removed too, ask the operator.
- Limit or object to use
- Write to [email protected] (see Who is responsible).
- Complain
- You can complain to Nemzeti Adatv\u00e9delmi \u00e9s Inform\u00e1ci\u00f3szabads\u00e1g Hat\u00f3s\u00e1g (NAIH), the Hungarian data protection authority \u2014 https://naih.hu.
If you were searched for
You have the same rights over what was kept about you. You cannot see the app yourself, so write to [email protected] and include the detail that was searched (for example the username or email address). Because the log keeps only a scrambled form of searched details, the operator needs it to check whether, when and on what ground you were searched for, and which account holder to ask to delete the results.
Changes to this notice
When what the server keeps or shares changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. The operator can also announce a change in the app, under What's new.
